Palm Sunday and Prophecy

One of the wondrous qualities of scripture is the giving of the prophetic promise, and the subsequent miraculous fulfillment of it. Only the LORD can prophesy, for the testimony (martyria) of Jesus IS the Spirit of prophesy (Rev. 19:10), and only the LORD can fulfill prophecy.
The same holds true of the prophecies and fulfillment regarding the important events that occurred on what we call "Palm Sunday". Everything that occurred that day was prophesied many centuries before. Let us see the fulfillment unfold before our eyes:
"And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto Me. And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway, he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet..."   Mt. 21:1-4 (fulfilling the prophecy below):
"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass."  Zech. 9:9 (Isa. 62:11)
"And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way."  Mt. 21:8 (2 Ki. 9:13, Lev. 23:40)
"And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna ("Save now") to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest."  Mt. 21:9 (fulfilling the prophecy below):
"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I beseech Thee, O LORD, I beseech Thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD."  Ps. 118:24-26 (A Psalm of Passover)
"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said to the, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves."  Mt. 21:12-13 (Fulfilling the prophecy below):
"Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer...For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations."   Isa. 56:7

After this, Jesus healed the blind and the lame that were brought to Him in the temple that day. However, not everyone was pleased, not everyone was rejoicing that day, the day that Salvation entered into Jerusalem, and into the house of God. Even though the prophetic promises were well known, and even though these prophecies were fulfilled in their sight, in their hearts they thought otherwise:
And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying in the temple, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were sore displeased..."   Mt. 21:!5
Jesus reminded them that even the cries of the children that were so displeasing to these men, were a fulfillment of prophecy:
"Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast Thou ordained strength..."  Ps. 8:2

As we can see, Christ's entry into Jerusalem that day fulfilled prophecy. His death a few days later, including the manner of His death, and His resurrection were also prophesied. Prophesies of His second coming, and the establishing of His millennial kingdom reign here on earth are also recorded in scripture, and we are living in the days when we could very well see their fulfillment. This makes our understanding of the written prophecies very important. We will discuss much more next week, but the following are some of the prophecies that were either fulfilled by the death and resurrection of Jesus, or pertain to His soon return:
"In that day, there shall be a fountain (spring of life, flow of blood) opened (let loose, to free, to open oneself) to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness."  Zech. 13:1
"As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant, I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water."  Zech. 9:11
After Jesus was crucified, the centurion opened a wound in His side with a spear, water and blood flowed out fulfilling this prophecy. Witnessing this and other things at the site, this soldier declared that this truly was the Son of God (Mt. 27:54). As prophesied above, Jesus' blood is the only provision to wash sin away, and make us clean. The blood of His covenant freed the captives of Sheol, as He descended to them after His death (1 Pet. 3:18-19, 4:6 , Ps. 68:18). It also frees us from the pit that would have been our destination without His blood.
"And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends".  Zech. 13:6
"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him,, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."  Zech. 12:10
Not only do these two verses from Zechariah prophesy about the nature of the Son's wounds, but the people shall see the evidence of them, after the fact. There is physical evidence that we all can see right now, which we will discuss next week, that bears witness to His wounds, and there is a second coming at which His wounds will be evident, even as they were evident to His disciples after His resurrection (Jn. 20:20, 25-27). His wounds bear witness to exactly who He is.
"Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be My people, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hast sent Me unto thee."   Zech. 2:10-11
While this prophecy reminds us of Jesus' joyous entrance into Jerusalem on "Palm Sunday" before the Passover, the scope of its promise to us goes beyond that event, and brings us the promise of His return. He doesn't just return but He will dwell with us here. Also many nations will be joined to Him at that time. This describes His millennial reign (Rev. 22:7, 12,  Isa. 62:11).
As we can see, every part of Jesus' life and ministry fulfilled, and will fulfill, all that has been prophesied regarding Him, including the events of Palm Sunday.
The prophecies and their sure fulfillment fill us with hope in God, and with the assurance that He will keep His Word. Search the scriptures for yourself, pray to accept Him, and enter into that hope, truth and assurance that the LORD has provided so miraculously for us.

Will You Be An April Fool?

One account of the origin of the phrase "April Fool", centers around the observance of the new year. Scripture declares that the beginning of the new year occurs at Passover, in the month of Nisan, or March/April. Empires changed, and calendars changed, even the church decided to separate itself from the Passover, and the new year began to be observed in January instead. If people continued to observe the Biblical new year, they were referred to as "April fools". Scripture has many things to say about fools, as well:
"The fool (nabal- senseless; to sink or drop down, languish, wither and fall, fade) hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."  Ps. 14:1, Ps. 53:1
While all of us have failed to "do good", the fool has rejected his only remedy-the LORD. Who but a fool would reject the only remedy to death?
Jesus told the parable of a rich man who had reaped so much fruit from his fields, that his main concern in life was how he could store up all of his goods for future enjoyment. If he could store up enough, he would not have to worry or labor the rest of his life, but he could instead "eat, drink, and be merry" (Lk. 12:15-19). So he tore down his old barns, and built new larger barns to hold all the fruits of his fields. However, God called him a fool, telling him, "...this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?" (V. 20). This fool was someone who believed that accumulating wealth for himself was most important, and neglected the things of God. Those things that he valued would be no good to him at his moment of death. The future life of ease that he had pictured, never came to pass. Only a fool would put all of his efforts into hoarding fruit that will eventually rot anyway, instead of investing his efforts into those things that last eternally.
The recent passings of two diverse men of public stature, Rev. Billy Graham and astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, may, according to scripture, also be an example of two diverse futures. Billy Graham, from a young age, committed himself, his whole life, to the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in which he so deeply believed. Many found salvation in the Gospel as he preached. He is considered to be one of the greatest evangelists of our time. Stephen Hawking studied the heavens, and remarked on many occasions that science offered a more convincing explanation of the universe than a belief in God. He identified himself as an atheist. Hawking was considered to be one of the greatest scientists of our time.
Jesus told this parable regarding the passing of two different kinds of men in Lk. 16:19-31. It is certainly a parable for our times. Again, one man is very rich, but unnamed, and the other, Lazarus ("whom God helps: surrounds, protects, aids, relieves"), is a poor, diseased beggar, but he carries the name of God. Both men die. In death, the two men's conditions are as different as they were in life. Now, however, the unnamed rich man finds himself tormented in hell, while the poor man, Lazarus, was carried by angels into "Abraham's Bosom" (v. 22-23). Seeing Lazarus and Abraham afar off, the rich man begs Abraham to allow Lazarus to bring even a drop of cool water to his parched throat, as he is tormented in flame. This is impossible, however, because there is a great gulf fixed forever separating the two areas, Abraham explained. Then the rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus back to the rich man's family, to warn his brothers, so they wouldn't also end up in this terrible place of torment (v. 27-28). Abraham answers that the rich man's brothers have their warning from the words of Moses and the prophets. If they won't believe their words, they also won't believe and repent even if a man were to be sent back from the dead (v. 29-31).
These are the words of Moses, given to him by the LORD, that the rich man and his brothers did not heed:
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore, choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: that thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest cleave unto Him: for He is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."  Deut. 30:19-20
These words of Moses, and all of scripture, puts this same choice before every one: the choice of life or death, blessing or cursing. The LORD even spells out which choice to make:
"Choose life!".
There have been many testimonies of those who have returned from death, and near-death experiences, sent back from the dead, as the rich man requested of Abraham in the parable. They are witnesses to heaven, and some have witnessed and experienced hell. One man, Dr. Richard Eby, experienced both heaven and hell, and wrote of his experiences in two books: "Caught Up Into Paradise", and "Tell Them I Am Coming". There are many books and witness accounts, even from medical doctors, who relate these experiences.
Will you be like the foolish rich man and his brothers, who, caught up in the enjoyment of their earthly comfort, never listened to Moses and the prophets, and never made the choice for life? Will you be like some who have heard the testimonies of those who have been sent back from the dead, but choose to ignore them?
The choice has been set before you this day, and heaven and earth record it. Life and death, blessing and cursing. Which will you choose? Choose life!

Let's pray this prayer together:

Jesus, I want to know You as my Lord, and as my Savior, who covers my sins, and cleanses my heart. Come into my heart, and also fill me with the Holy Spirit, who will lead me into all truth, and will teach me how to follow You. I believe that You are the Son of God, the Messiah, that You were crucified for me, and rose from the dead to give me everlasting life. I believe that You are coming again. I choose life!
Lord Jesus, in Your name I believe, pray, and receive all of these things. Amen.

The Next 21 Days

From the date of this message, it is twenty-one days until Resurrection Sunday, and the middle of Passover.
To the prophet Daniel, twenty-one days was revealed to be a period of intense spiritual warfare. Daniel had sought understanding regarding the vision he had received, and demonic principalities, namely the princes of Persia, had fought to prevent that understanding from being received. Finally, Michael, one of the chief angelic princes, had to come into the battle, and free the prophetic understanding to be given to Daniel (Dan. 10:14). The demonic princes had fought this understanding so hard because it dealt with the events to come in the "latter days", and it included a life-changing revelation. Daniel was so overwhelmed with the power of the understanding that came to him that he became without strength to stand or speak. The angel assured Daniel that he was there to show him "that which is noted in the scripture of truth" (v. 21).
God wants His people to seek understanding of the things which will come to pass in the latter days. He will do great spiritual battle to bring us this understanding.
What was the understanding given to Daniel for the latter days? It involved great warfare across the earth, and the rise of a certain powerful figure who will magnify himself above all gods, and will speak against the true God. This king will honor the god of forces and a "strange god". His heart shall be set against the holy covenant, and support those who do wickedly against the covenant:
"And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries..."  Dan. 11:32
However, even as the people of covenant are persecuted, the angel promises Daniel:
"...but the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet shall they fall...And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed."  Dan. 11:32-35 (excerpt)
Daniel is repeatedly told that these various events described are appointed for "the time of the end". Much of what Daniel is given to understand, is confirmed again in Revelation 13, which describes this same individual, there referred to as "the beast".
As we continue reading into chapter 12 of Daniel, Daniel and we are given the understanding of another event that is associated with those latter days:
"...and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time, thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever...Many shall be purified and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand....the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end."   Dan. 12:1-10
We can understand now from the corresponding passage in the Book of Revelation, that those not found written in "the book" mentioned in these verses above, refer to those who will worship the beast, "whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" in Rev. 13:8
According to the understanding given to Daniel, resurrection is an event connected directly to the "latter days".
Resurrection, of course, is also directly connected with the Person who is the resurrection, Jesus Christ. Paul said that Christ's resurrection, and consequently our own, is the fundamental belief of our faith. Let's see how Paul adamantly expresses this:
"Now if Christ be preached that He rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ is not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is vain...if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."   1 Cor. 15:12-20 (excerpt)
With the resurrection of Christ, along with the attending promise of our own resurrection, the clock of the latter days of Daniel began ticking. Christ's resurrection is not only an earthshaking spiritual event, but an end times event, and we are to be those with the understanding of this connection, as the angel told Daniel.
Paul also connects resurrection with the end times as he wants us to understand this "mystery" in 1 Cor. 15:51-57:
"Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed...death is swallowed up in victory...But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ."
Not only is resurrection promised to the dead in Christ, but a living resurrection is to be part of our understanding as well. The living are also raised up, being "changed" in an instant.
This concept of resurrection, shown to Daniel as part of the latter days' events, is full of a wealth of truth for our understanding. We are called to understand it.
Paul writes again that we should not be ignorant, but to understand the resurrection of the dead, and also its connection to the end times, and the coming of Jesus:
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him...For the Lord, Himself, shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord...comfort one another with these words."  1 Thess. 4:13-18
As it was with Daniel, as we enter these 21 days before Resurrection Sunday, there is a spiritual battle going on in the heavenlies, as the principalities of wickedness try to keep man from receiving the understanding and faith of the resurrection of Christ for all who will believeand also as a prophesied latter days event.
An opportunity is given to us, especially during these next 21 days, to understand these things, to instruct many, to be strong and do exploits, to shine as the wise, and most importantly, to be those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life: the Passover Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world, the resurrected Christ.

Connecting The Dots...

It is evident from the events occurring around us that we are nearing a spiritual reckoning. The times we are in are desperate, society is crumbling, and yet the Church is playing church. It is time for God's people to wake up, understand what scripture is saying about the times in which we live, and to rise up to role to which Jesus has called us: salt, light, and witnesses to the truth. As we look into scripture, we can begin to "connect the dots", and obtain an understanding of events, and our purpose in them.
This week, Purim was celebrated. The story of Purim is in the Book of Esther, which is also a prophetic book. The enemy of the Jews, Haman, had determined the day of the Jews' destruction by the casting of lots, called pur. The king had agreed to Haman's plan, and the decree of destruction had been set for the 13th day of twelfth month, Adar ("glorious, fire"). However, something miraculous happened on that day instead:
"Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them)...And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai (Esther's kinsman) fell upon them...when Esther came before the king, he commanded... that (Haman's) wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head... "  Est. 9:1-3, 25 (excerpt)
What caused this miraculous turn around in events? Esther, who had not been called into the king's presence for a month, requested that all of the Jews fast and pray for three days, as she and her attendants would do also, in order to receive the king's favor for her approach to him (Est. 4:11-16). This prayer and fasting had indeed brought Esther favor with the king, and she was eventually able to expose the wickedness of Haman's plot. The appointed day of destruction for the Jews by their enemy, became their day of victorious deliverance by the LORD, instead. The condition of much of the church is the same as Esther's. We have been distracted and busy with other things, and we have not appeared before our heavenly King lately. With our backs turned toward Him, He has not seen our faces, and we have not sought His. Perhaps, like Esther, we incorrectly assume that this day will not touch us, so we sit and remain silent. Yet the decreed day of destruction approaches, and seeking the LORD with repentance and intercession is the only hope against that day. We need to remember that the origins of this day are found in the wicked plots against God's people.
The prophet Joel presents a similar vision of the decreed day when the LORD compels the nations, who have plotted the Jews' destruction, to gather in the Valley of Decision:
"Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision."  Joel 3:14
The nations are brought to the valley, because like Haman in the Book of Esther, "their wickedness is great" (v. 13). The timing of this appointment in the valley comes when Judah and Jerusalem has been brought back from captivity. These nations had scattered Israel among the nations and "parted My land" (v. 1-2). We are living in the time when Israel has been restored to the land, and the nations are once again desiring to partition the land of covenant promise, for their own political advantage. As the LORD details their wickedness, He says, "And they have cast lots for My people" (v. 3), as was Haman's method. Also as happened in the Book of Esther, God promises these wicked nations who plot against His people: "...swiftly and speedily will I return your recompense upon your own head" (v. 4, 7).
Again, we can connect the dots between Esther and Joel, and the approaching of the terrible day of the LORD, as we look at what Joel instructed God's people to do. The LORD says to His people:
"...now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning: and rent your heart...and turn unto the LORD your God...
Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly...Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare Thy people, O LORD..."  Joel 2:12-17 (excerpt)
As His people are obedient to His word, the LORD promises a great restoration in their fields and pastures, and an even greater outpouring of His Spirit upon all of His people, even as signs in the heavens and the earth announce the coming of the great and the terrible day of the LORD (Joel 2:21-31), when God returns the evil of the nations that sought His people's destruction.
Though the outpouring of the Spirit of God is promised in Joel, there are those today who mock the Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent into believers' lives. Some of the mockers are in the world, and some are even in the church. This is dangerous because it is not possible receive the promise of deliverance, while mocking its agent. Joel continues:
"And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in Mt. Zion, and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call."   Joel 2:32
It is a remnant who will hear and choose to accept the call of the LORD by His Spirit. As Jesus told us, "Narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." (Mt. 7:14).
The prophet Amos warns us that "playing church" will not suffice as the day of the LORD approaches. He says that this day should instill fear in our hearts, because it is a terrifying thing. The LORD warned that He would not accept offerings and worship to Him from His people, while they also served other gods and idols (Amos 5:18-26). Those others gods are still being served today, even within the church. Amos mentions the gods Moloch, who demanded the sacrifice of the first born child through fire, and Chiun, in the form of pillars erected to the god Saturn, which was considered to be an evil demon to be appeased. We also have accepted the murder of our children, and made it law. We have sought appeasement with ungodliness, accepting, in the name of political correctness, and out of intimidation by society, those things that the LORD has called wickedness, abomination, and those things that He hates. Similarly, Pharaoh was willing to tolerate the plague of frogs for another night in order to resist God (Ex. 8:9-10). People asked Jesus to leave their town after He commanded a legion of demons, which had plagued a man, into their pigs. The crazed pigs then ran off a cliff. The people resented losing their pigs (Mt. 8:28-34). We want to be able to keep our spiritual frogs and pigs, while we claim to continue to serve God, but God will not accept this.
The LORD says in Amos 5:27, that those of His people who connect themselves to these other gods, while claiming to worship Him, will be cause to go into captivity (remove, depart) beyond (distance, remoteness) Damascus ("silent is the sackcloth weaver"). In other words, they will be captive in a spiritual condition where repentance will not be sought by them, so it will be unavailable to them. They will be beyond, and removed from, an attitude of repentance.
All signs indicate that we are nearing the day of the LORD, when God will turn the destructive wickedness of the enemies of God's people against themselves. We, His people, are expected to be able to read these signs, and act accordingly-not be complicit in their wickedness. As we connect the dots regarding the approaching of the day of the LORD, we can see the prophetic pattern of the assignment given to the people of God. We are called to fasting, and repentance. We are called to seek our King's face and presence. We are called to leave the world's idols behind, and to worship the LORD only, in Spirit and in truth.
