Pray for a Fifth Awakening*
We have put forth the call to the Ekklesia to begin fasting and praying in repentance, and for a spiritual revival to fill America.
Revival is accompanied by onfirming signs and miracles, and by large numbers of people coming to the salvation of Christ. There have been four previous awakenings or revivals in American history. The First Great Awakening covered the years 1700-1755. These years were marked by the preaching of men like Jonathan Edwards and his famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", which is still a very powerful and timely message today. The Second Great Awakening took place in the years of the late 1700's to about 1850. It is remembered by the New York Revival, started by one businessman dedicating an hour at lunchtime for prayer, and soon spread to include many. The Third Great Awakening, between the years 1855-1930, included the Azusa Street Revival, again started by a handful in earnest prayer at Azusa St. in Los Angeles, California. It was led by a black preacher named William J. Seymour. Many new denominations, especially Pentacostal, came out of the Azusa Street Revival, but racism divided the new churches, who would not put themselves under the authority of a black man. Segregated churches continued to be the norm. During these same years, there was a growth in a "social Gospel", the purpose of which was to start works for social change. Finally, the Fourth Great Awakening took place between 1960-1980, some believing that this is an ongoing renewal. This Awakening was known for The Jesus Movement, and the Charismatic Renewal, which began in the Catholic Church. All of these great spiritual awakenings started out in a great spiritual outpouring. Then social and political reforms would came out of these awakenings. Finally, there would come spiritual challenges like racism, and then eventually a decline in the revival fervor.
The Church needs to begin preparing a spiritul foundation for a new awakening to fill America. This is what I am bringing forth in today's message.
Scripture gives us the first component of preparation. Ephesians 6 tells us to be strong in the Lord, and the power of His might, and to prepare ourselves spiritually with the whole armour of God (v. 10-17). That armour covers us from our heads to our feet. The spiritual armour's purpose is not to do battle against other people who are flesh and blood, but against the wiles of the devil that seek to entrap us, and "against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (v. 12). We put on our armour, we take our stand, and we build the first part of the foundation of spiritual awakening and revival - we pray: "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." (v. 18). We pray for all the saints, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, or denomination.
Almost all, if not all, of the previous historical Awakenings began with selfless prayer.
Our second component of preparation requires us to recognize sin, and to determined to keep it from our lives. For the sin in our lives, we need to repent. Proverbs 1 carries the teaching of wisdom regarding the destructive nature of sin, and the estrangement from God and the consequences that it causes (Prov. 1:28-33). Proverbs 1 calls us to wisdom, understanding, and "To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity." In these things dwell the righteous precepts of God. It is the nature of sin to entice, however. It is by the knowledge, and understanding that comes with the worship and awe of the LORD, that we are warned to resist it (Prov. 1:7-8).
Our third component in preparation for a spiritual awakening in this nation is faith. There are those in the Body of Christ who do not believe in miracles. They do not believe that God can sweep a nation in revival and renewal by His Holy Spirit. Whatever we do in Christ, we must do it with this understanding: "But without faith, it is impossible to please him (God): for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." The history of our faith is full of people who believed God's promises, who believed HIM.
We have an example in scripture of a great awakening. In obedience to a risen Christ, His disciples gathered together in an upper room, situated above David's tomb, on the Feast of Pentecost. In fulfillment of Christ's promise to send them a Comforter, and in Christ's fulfillment of this feast of the LORD, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples that day: "And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:1-4). However, as is the nature of great awakenings, the effects did not remain with the group of disciples only, but impacted those Jews from all nations who had come to Jerusalem, to David's tomb below, for the Feast of Pentecost. Though they were from many different nations, they heard the disciples speaking their own various native languages (v. 5-6). At first, they didn't understand what this could be, and some thought that the disciples were drunk. This gave Peter not only the opportunity to present the full Gospel of Christ, but to point to the prophetic promise from God of this kind of awakening through the prophet Joel:"But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants, and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy..." (Acts 2:16-18/Joel 2:28-29). Peter's preaching of repentance and salvation moved the hearts of the many listeners, and they asked what they needed to do (v. 37). Peter answered: "...Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call...Save yourselves from this untoward generation." (v. 38-40). Three thousand souls were saved in just that one day of awakening.
We must understand, though, that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Day of Pentecost, and the subsequent outpourings that have followed, come in a context. The prophet Joel revealed that this spiritual awakening comes before the great and terrible day of the LORD. These awakenings come with impending days of darkness, fire, blood and smoke, of terrible signs in the heavens and on earth. The spiritual outpouring of Joel, upon which all other outpourings have been modelled, came after an urgent warning of trumpets had gone forth, and the people were gathered together in a solemn assembly to fast, pray and repent; to cry out to God: "Spare thy people, O LORD..." (Joel 2:12-17).
The Church is being called by God to set the foundation for revival, a fifth Great Awakening, in this nation. He is calling us to fasting, prayer,repentance, and faith.

Church in America, Will You Hear?*
From our beginning, America was established with a dependence upon the Christian faith. One of the earliest founding documents, The Mayflower Compact, which was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony, was written and signed in 1620 before the settlers disembarked from the ship. This document says in part:
"IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten...Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and advancement of the Christian Faith..."
Subsequent American history, which includes slavery, tells us that the Godly foundations of America were violated at an early point, and continues to be violated by a people who have chosen to call evil good, and good evil, with abortion as just one current example.
This message seeks to reveal the steps that need to be taken for the repentance and revival that America needs.

Jesus delivered these words to Israel, but they are true for any people who reject the truth of God. The kingdom of God can, and will be removed from them. Even the American Church incorporates new age falsehoods and mysticism. Atheism and Humanism are acceptable in America while faith, especially the Christian faith, becomes more and more mocked and persecuted.

We were abundantly blessed by God in this country in order to bring forth edifying spiritual fruit that benefits many, but instead, we have used those blessings to bring forth spiritual briars and thorns, of no desirability, or useful purpose.
We have seen calamity upon calamity befall this nation, as is warned of in the Psalms:
"Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law." Ps. 119:53
As we read last week in Ezekiel 22, Isaiah 5, and Hosea 4, the LORD prophesies woe and destruction for the nation that embraces the shedding of blood, the oppression of the weak and poor, the corruption of governing leaders, and religious leaders, who compromise what they know is right for ungodly gain, and whose people follow the same corrupt example. Such a nation will reap the rewards of their unrighteousness. As this nation has turned its back on the mercy, truth and knowledge of God, and forgotten Him, He will also forget our children.
God cries out to America in the same way that He cried out to Israel:
"Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the LORD God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the LORD God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." Ezek. 18:30-32
In what turned out to be a prophetic glimpse into the condition of America, Rev. D. James Kennedy said,
"Tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society. When you have an immoral society that has blatantly, proudly, violated all of the commandments of God, there is one last virtue they insist upon: tolerance for their immorality."
Doesn't this sound familiar in America? America insists upon tolerance for all ungodliness, but shows little tolerance for the mention of God, neither His name, nor His Word.

Life and death hangs in the balance of America's decision regarding repentance for our iniquity and transgressions, although God does not desire any to perish. He is longsuffering, that we might yet repent, and live. The question is: Will America repent? We have been wrong about many things in this nation, so it is time to say we were, and are, wrong.
In a Psalm about the LORD's mercy to us, it is written:
"I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD." Ps. 118:17-19
Turn and live America, while God is crying out to you.

Mothers and Life*
Mother's Day has always been a special day to this ministry. We have seen the birth of miracle babies from the anointing present on Mother's Day.
Mothers play a huge role in our lives. Many can testify that they were saved through the faithful prayers of their mothers and grandmothers. We cannot underestimate the influence in our lives of mothers.
There is a special connection, both spiritually and naturally, between mothers and life. After the fall of man, even before children were born, the woman was identified as having this special purpose:
"And Adam called his wife's name Eve (chavvah: life, living, life-giver; root: to be restored to life; revive (from sickness, discouragement, death); because she was the mother of all living." Gen 3:20
As we can see from the meaning of Eve's name, not only is it associated with life-giving, but with revival, even resurrection. Only women can bring forth life. There are many instances in scripture of God miraculously bringing forth life through a woman, even when it would seem impossible (Gen. 18:9-15).
Most societies throughout history have been patriarchal, but a few, including Native Americans, have had a matriarchal society. These matriarchal societies understood the life-giving purpose of women, which also indicated to them a woman's special relationship with God. The special life-giving and life-changing relationship a mother has with her child is reflective of the life-giving relationship that the Father has with His children, and that which His Son, Jesus has with all living:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." Jn. 1:1-5
"Life" described above as originating in Christ is the Greek word "zoe". It means "life, the absolute fullness of life...which belongs to God; life, real and genuine, active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed...those who put their trust in Christ, including the more perfect everlasting body attained after resurrection". This kind of life cannot be overtaken by darkness. Again, as with the Hebrew meaning of the name "Eve", the concept of life is associated with present life, revived spiritual life, and resurrection life. And both, therefore, must be directly associated with God and Christ. It is the LORD who "maketh alive", even from the grave (1 Sam. 2:6), and it is the woman who is called "the life giver".
Scripture makes clear the concept of the new life found in Christ, a resurrection life, "zoe" life, even while we are still living in the world.
"...Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?...so many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death...like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life...in the likeness of his resurrection." Rom. 6:1-5
The kind of life, both through the woman, Eve, and through the work of Christ in us, which is revived, resurrection life, carries with it the quality of separation from sin. The kind of "zoe" life spoken of here is not compatible, nor co-existent, with sin, which is death (Rom. 6:21-23). This kind of life causes us to be freed from sin, becoming servants of righteousness, bearing fruit unto holiness and everlasting life (v. 18, 22).
Considering this connection that exists between the life-giving, life-reviving, life-changing purpose in a mother's identity, and the original life-giving, life-reviving, and life-changing power in God and Christ, mothers have a special responsibility in prayer, especially in these times in which we are living. Pray for this nation to humble itself, repent, and turn back to God (2 Chron. 7:14). Pray for the men. Pray for the children. Let an army of life-givers, mothers, be raised up to fulfill this purpose.

The Way Back to Greatness
I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that "except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall be become a reproach and a bye word down to future age. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human Wisdom, and leave it to chance, war, and conquest.
I therefore beg leave to move -- that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that service. In order for America to become great again, for which cause many Americans have cried out, America must find out the truth of what made it great in the first place. Its greatness is not found in its checkered history, nor its wealth and power, nor its political system and elected officials. America's greatness is found in the light that was brought to the whole world through its foundational principles. Never before had such hope and promise been offered to peoples and nations as was offered in the founding tenets of this nation. Other nations were so awed by those principles, that they copied the ideas into their own new constitutions and governments. Americans revere their foundational documents, but do they understand the divine inspiration and truth from which those documents were drawn, and the prayer that was necessary in order to bring many disparate views together into a national unity? Through all of the debate and divisive thoughts and opinions, the founders repeatedly returned to and clung to the one principle that unified them all- that God is the Creator and King over all, including the nation they were trying to establish.The greatness of this nation was begun in the Word of God, and in humble prayers of dependence upon Him, and the greatness of this nation will be found again only in the return to these same things. King David described it this way:
"The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion...
We will rejoice in Thy salvation, and in the name of our God, we will set up banners: the LORD fulfill all thy petitions...He will hear him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen and stand upright. Save LORD..." Psalm 20 (excerpt)
Military might will not save a nation, nor define its greatness. America! - we tell you to trust in the name that can save, the name of the LORD our God. Battle banners are impressive, but it is the banner of the LORD's name that delivers from destruction. The return to greatness that American hearts are crying out for cannot be found in an election, or a political figure:
"Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God. The LORD shall reign forever...unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD." Ps. 146 (excerpt)
Even when men have led America in good ways with good thoughts and plans, when they perish, that way perishes with them, and with their generation. However, what the LORD establishes and revives lives forever, because He lives forever, to ALL generations. Men aspire to do justice, but the LORD IS justice for all (v. 7-9).
The LORD, in His mercy, has brought many great spiritual revivals to this nation, and saved many through them. Those revivals have come through humble believers, who cried out to Him in prayer. One of the greatest revivals at Azusa Street, in 1906, became plagued by racism and division. White people broke away because they did not want to come under the authority of a black man, William Seymour, whose prayers and heartfelt desire for the face of God, birthed the revival that saved them. Revival and restoration to greatness starts in the heart of a believer. The Church is still crippled in racism, strife and division. The Church itself needs revival back to greatness in Christ, to the truth of God's Word. Are believers calling upon the name of the LORD for restoration of this nation, or are they trusting in the winner of an election, taking sides in the division of political "solutions"?
As America has come to a crossroads that will determine its future for generations, Dr. Stevenson has spent years preparing a book for just such a time as this. Each chapter deals with a key to restoring the true greatness of America. One of those keys lies in a challenge to a "world weary church" that has grown weary trying to conform to this world, trusting in this world, rather than being transformed into the image of Christ, and consequently transforming those around them:
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God." Rom. 12:1-2
The restored greatness of America is lying in the true, humble, heart of a believer, who is seeking the face of God and His truth, for himself, and for his troubled nation, whose heart is grieved by what he sees, and is crying to God for His help. Trust in the LORD: our help comes from God.
A long ago generation left us a key to the way back to greatness for America. This key was established to help us if we, as a nation, lost our way. It is in the form of a monument established near Plymouth Rock, which is commonly considered to be the birthplace of America. To honor the Pilgrim forefathers who established this nation in faith, the monument is called, National Monument to the Forefathers**. This monument was also the subject of a documentary called, "Monumental"***, which is strongly recommended for your viewing. The four sides of the base of the monument represent Morality, Law, Education, and Liberty. Each side of the base has keys of spiritual knowledge pertaining to those four building blocks of this nation. For example, the north face features a representation of Morality, a woman holding a tablet bearing the beginning of the Ten Commandments, “I am the Lord thy God.” Rising far above, and in the midst of those four sides of the pedestal of the monument is the figure representing Faith, which is holding the Bible.
This is where the greatness of our nation began, and this is where we will find the way back to greatness.

We will rejoice in Thy salvation, and in the name of our God, we will set up banners: the LORD fulfill all thy petitions...He will hear him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand. Military might will not save a nation, nor define its greatness. America! - we tell you to trust in the name that can save, the name of the LORD our God. Battle banners are impressive, but it is the banner of the LORD's name that delivers from destruction. The return to greatness that American hearts are crying out for cannot be found in an election, or a political figure:
"Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God. The LORD shall reign forever...unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD." Ps. 146 (excerpt)
Even when men have led America in good ways with good thoughts and plans, when they perish, that way perishes with them, and with their generation. However, what the LORD establishes and revives lives forever, because He lives forever, to ALL generations. Men aspire to do justice, but the LORD IS justice for all (v. 7-9).
The LORD, in His mercy, has brought many great spiritual revivals to this nation, and saved many through them. Those revivals have come through humble believers, who cried out to Him in prayer. One of the greatest revivals at Azusa Street, in 1906, became plagued by racism and division. White people broke away because they did not want to come under the authority of a black man, William Seymour, whose prayers and heartfelt desire for the face of God, birthed the revival that saved them. Revival and restoration to greatness starts in the heart of a believer. The Church is still crippled in racism, strife and division. The Church itself needs revival back to greatness in Christ, to the truth of God's Word. Are believers calling upon the name of the LORD for restoration of this nation, or are they trusting in the winner of an election, taking sides in the division of political "solutions"?
As America has come to a crossroads that will determine its future for generations, Dr. Stevenson has spent years preparing a book for just such a time as this. Each chapter deals with a key to restoring the true greatness of America. One of those keys lies in a challenge to a "world weary church" that has grown weary trying to conform to this world, trusting in this world, rather than being transformed into the image of Christ, and consequently transforming those around them:
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God." Rom. 12:1-2
The restored greatness of America is lying in the true, humble, heart of a believer, who is seeking the face of God and His truth, for himself, and for his troubled nation, whose heart is grieved by what he sees, and is crying to God for His help. Trust in the LORD: our help comes from God.
A long ago generation left us a key to the way back to greatness for America. This key was established to help us if we, as a nation, lost our way. It is in the form of a monument established near Plymouth Rock, which is commonly considered to be the birthplace of America. To honor the Pilgrim forefathers who established this nation in faith, the monument is called, National Monument to the Forefathers**. This monument was also the subject of a documentary called, "Monumental"***, which is strongly recommended for your viewing. The four sides of the base of the monument represent Morality, Law, Education, and Liberty. Each side of the base has keys of spiritual knowledge pertaining to those four building blocks of this nation. For example, the north face features a representation of Morality, a woman holding a tablet bearing the beginning of the Ten Commandments, “I am the Lord thy God.” Rising far above, and in the midst of those four sides of the pedestal of the monument is the figure representing Faith, which is holding the Bible.
This is where the greatness of our nation began, and this is where we will find the way back to greatness.
